    Blue Layers

Heavily wooded White Mountains of New Hampshire appear as blue layers in this high-saturation image taken at dawn.

    Seaside Curves

Route 1A hugs the rocky coastline in North Hampton, New Hampshire at sunrise on this calm summer day. A bench beckons walkers and runners to pause and absorb the expansive ocean view. The curvy ribbon of asphalt also offers beautiful vistas for bikers and motorists – it won’t be empty long, due to the popularity of this portion of the New Hampshire State Seacoast Scenic Byway.

  • North Beach Sunrise

    North Beach Sunrise

Clouds provide the backdrop for this sunrise, with rays peaking through at North Beach in Hampton, New Hampshire. This was a relatively calm early morning on the Atlantic Ocean as gentle waves lap the shore.

  • Golden Cliff

    Golden Cliff

Sunrise illuminates the cliff and surrounding trees at Stonehouse Pond in Barrington, New Hampshire. An ethereal mist hovers over the pond and a reflection of the cliff appears in the near-shore waters.

The Southeast Land Trust of New Hampshire (SELT) has conserved this area and maintains a trail network here. The hike up the Ledges Trail that leads to the top of the cliff is relatively easy, but care must be taken at the top since it is a sheer 150-foot drop to the pond below.

  • Sunrise on the Piscataqua

    Sunrise on the Piscataqua

A warm summer sun rises over the Piscataqua River seen from Bloody Point in Newington, New Hampshire, a name given to this land due to boundary disputes among the early settlers. It lies a short distance across the river from Hilton Point, named for Edward and William Hilton, the first Europeans to settle what is now the city of Dover, (arguably) considered the “7th Settlement” in North America by Europeans. People of the Abenaki tribe were here long before that; the word Piscataqua is believed to be a combination of peske (branch) with tegwe (a river with a strong current, possibly tidal).

  • Dawn on Manning Lake

    Dawn on Manning Lake

The sun rises over the hills surrounding Manning Lake in Gilmanton, New Hampshire. This small lake is a great place to kayak and fish. Half of the shoreline is undeveloped and it offers a variety of underwater structure in the form of large rocks and boulders in the water and along the shore. With just a few cottages on the lake, it was a quiet place to paddle during the early morning hours.

  • Odiorne Point Sunrise

    Odiorne Point Sunrise

This image was captured at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, New Hampshire. It was early in the morning on a warm June day. I was walking on the sandy beach area in the northern area of the park looking out toward Little Harbor as the sun was rising. Trees in silhouette usually add interest to early morning scenes – this one didn’t disappoint.

  • White Lake at Dawn

    White Lake at Dawn

White Lake is a small, picturesque lake near Tamworth, New Hampshire nestled at the southern edge of the White Mountains. It opens up dramatic views of Mount Chocorua and other peaks of the Sandwich Range, as can be seen in this image where early morning fog settles in the valley below the mountain.

The lake was formed when Ice Age glaciers retreated, leaving a depression that filled with water. The shallow waters appear very clean against a light sandy bottom along most of the lake edge.

  • Portsmouth Harbor Light at Sunrise

    Portsmouth Harbor Light at Sunrise

Taken during an early springtime morning in New Hampshire, this image of Portsmouth Harbor lighthouse shows the trees just starting to leaf out in the background. Although the vantage point is Great Island Common in New Castle a half-mile away, a telephoto lens in concert with a tight image crop pulls in the houses across the harbor in Kittery, Maine.

This is the only lighthouse along the New Hampshire seacoast located on the mainland. The original wooden lighthouse was established in 1771, and replaced in 1878 by the current 48-foot cast-iron, brick-lined tower. It is still an active navigational aid outfitted with a fourth order Fresnel lens made of green acrylic, visible for 12 miles.

The photograph was inspired by the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse postage stamp (Scott #4792), part of the New England Lighthouses series issued in 2013.

Early morning light at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, New Hampshire. This side of the park borders Little Harbor where the calm waters have allowed a sandy beach to form along the rocky coastline.
