  • Safe Harbor in New Castle

    Safe Harbor in New Castle

A lobster boat is moored in the quiet waters of Portsmouth Harbor seen from Goat Island in New Castle, NH. There’s a kayak put-in on this small chunk of land that includes a couple of homes and the Kittery Point Yacht Club. The island provides footings for two bridges that connect Portsmouth with New Castle, a charming village of about one-thousand people. It is the only New Hampshire town situated entirely on an island. Several other islands can be seen in this section of the tidal Piscataqua River.

  • Gundalow Piscataqua

    Gundalow Piscataqua

Gundalows were cargo boats unique to New Hampshire and Maine waters. They were used to transport goods along the estuaries and harbors of the region, particularly in tidal areas. Propulsion was a combination of drifting with the tides and using their single lateen sail, which could be quickly lowered to pass under bridges. The Gundalow Company in Portsmouth New Hampshire operates educational cruises aboard the newly constructed replica, Piscataqua, named after the river flowing through Portsmouth Harbor.

  • Old Harbor Life-Saving Station

    Old Harbor Life-Saving Station

Surrounded by sand dunes and ocean, the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station Museum chronicles the history of the United States Lifesaving Service, a government agency chartered to patrol the coastline and save victims (and cargo!) of shipwrecks.

Created in 1871, this agency utilized stations such as the one in the picture to base operations for these life-saving duties. This building was actually built in Chatham, Massachusetts in 1898, one of thirteen stations along Cape Cod’s ocean-side beaches. It was moved to this location on Race Point in 1977 and now serves as a museum. When in operation, crews kept watch for ships in distress, ready to use surfboats, breeches buoys, and other apparatus to save shipwrecked sailors and passengers.

  • Whaleback Light at Sunrise

    Whaleback Light at Sunrise

Whaleback light stands in silhouette with exposed rocks in the shadows of the rising sun. Taken from Great Island Common in New Castle, New Hampshire, this lighthouse is located on a small island in Kittery Maine at the entrance to Portsmouth harbor. Established in 1820, it has been rebuilt several times and now sends its beam from a modern, high-powered LED light. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was recently acquired by the American Lighthouse Foundation.

  • Popham Beach Roses

    Popham Beach Roses

Blue skies and sunshine liven the scene this early morning at Popham Beach in Phippsburg Maine. Beach roses (Rosa Rugosa) are a hardy flowering shrub that tolerates salt spray, so can often be seen along stretches of coastline.

Fox Island, the nearest hill, is connected to the beach at low tide but becomes a proper island at high tide. Seguin Island can be seen further offshore – its lighthouse was built in 1857 and is now on the National Registry of Historic Places.
