Looking up within the atrium of the John F Kennedy library in Boston, reveals an abstract design of circles and gridded scaffolding. I used an artistic filter to emphasize the geometric pattern of the supports.
The Highland Lighthouse is located on outer Cape Cod in Truro, Massachusetts, providing a beacon for mariners on the North Atlantic. In 1996, the 66-foot tall brick structure had to be moved away from the eroding clay cliffs common in this area. On this day in June 2023, purple flowers and weathered fence rails frame the lighthouse under gray overcast skies. Visitors to this National Park Service site can climb the stairs to admire the view of the seashore.

Plum Island is a barrier beach near Newburyport, Massachusetts. Here, the waves have been kicked up by the same storm that raked the New Jersey shore and dumped snow on Washington DC late January 2016.

The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge preserves over 4700 acres of salt marsh, sand dunes, and beachfront on the north shore of Massachusetts at Plum Island, not far from Newburyport. Home to over 300 species of animals, it is a prime area to view migratory birds. With its core mission of providing crucial wildlife habitat, the refuge typically closes large sections of beachfront in the spring to protect the Piping Plover, a shorebird that nests on the open beach and is very sensitive to human encroachment.
This wooden boardwalk winds through the sand dunes from parking area #3 to the ocean. The scene was captured on an unusually warm November day with a stiff wind blowing. The grasses have turned to a soft tan color, most of the tree leaves have fallen, but some bushes still show off their red leaves; red berries are abundant.

The sand dunes along Race Point beach at the tip of Cape Cod are beautiful, with green dune grasses separated by sandy depressions. Here footsteps lead up the dune face. An expansive view of the Atlantic Ocean spreads out from this vantage point.

Sandy Point State Reservation lies at the southern end of Plum Island, a classic barrier island along the Atlantic coast in Newbury, Massachusetts. Access to the 77-acre site is from the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge access road. Together with the refuge, This whole area, spanning a little under 5,000 acres, preserves both key salt marsh and barrier beach habitats.
The photograph, enhanced using High Dynamic Range techniques, was captured while I strolled the beach on an unusually warm October day. The time was close to sunset and the clouds provided an interesting sky to contrast with the rough sand and stone beach on the tip of the island.
The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge is a wide cable-stayed bridge connecting Boston and Charlestown, Massachusetts over the Charles River. Part of interstate 93, it was built as part of Boston’s “big dig” project. The bridge was named after the civil rights activist Lenny Zakim and the American colonists who fought the British in the Battle of Bunker Hill.
From this vantage point, one of the towers with it’s cabling that supports the roadway can be seen. The massive Boston Garden, home of the Boston Celtics basketball team and Boston Bruins hockey team can be seen at the end of the bridge. The image was captured from the North Bank Pedestrian Bridge which connects a ribbon of parklands running along the Charles from North Point Park in Cambridge to Paul Revere Park in Charlestown. That bridge, an interesting structure itself, is a 12-foot wide, 700-ft long, steel sinusoidal bridge so named because the side supports twist in a sine wave shape.

This image of the Boston skyline is taken from Fan Pier Park in a revitalized neighborhood of the city along Boston Harbor. Part of the Harborwalk, a 43-mile linear park along Boston’s shoreline, this area is perfect for a stroll with tremendous views, grassy areas, and park benches for relaxing, and plenty of restaurants and cafe’s in the area. The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) is located here. The Boston Tea Party Museum is a short walk across Fort Point Channel.

The tugboat Independence moored in the Cape Cod Canal. Buildings and the training ship of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy are seen in the background.
The Independence was built in 2009 by the Derektor Shipyards in Bridgeport, Connecticut. It measures 127′ long and generates 5,400 horsepower from its twin sixteen-cylinder diesel engines. For safety, tugboats generally have two of everything.
Approximately 15,000 vessels use the 7-mile long canal annually. It takes and hour and a half to transit, a much shorter journey than going around the tip of Cape Cod. The majority of the cargo is petroleum products like gasoline and fuel oil carried in long barges that are towed or pushed through the canal, with the assistance of a second tugboat to ensure safe passage.

I also processed the image to remove the color in all parts of the image except for the tugboat and water, making it stand out more clearly among the dense array of shapes of the academy buildings and ship in the background. This view of the Boston skyline was taken while I was on a Boston Harbor boat cruise. The distinctive arch of Rowe’s Wharf is prominent from this vantage point.
