    Shimmering Waters

Hiking the trail up West Rattlesnake Mountain in Holderness, New Hampshire is rewarding for the small effort expended. The views on this early autumn day were spectacular as the waters of Lake Squam shimmer below the summit cliffs. The foliage is just starting to turn color and the view includes Lake Winnipesaukee in the distance.

    Golden Cliff

Sunrise illuminates the cliff and surrounding trees at Stonehouse Pond in Barrington, New Hampshire. An ethereal mist hovers over the pond and a reflection of the cliff appears in the near-shore waters.

The Southeast Land Trust of New Hampshire (SELT) has conserved this area and maintains a trail network here. The hike up the Ledges Trail that leads to the top of the cliff is relatively easy, but care must be taken at the top since it is a sheer 150-foot drop to the pond below.

  • Dawn on Manning Lake

    Dawn on Manning Lake

The sun rises over the hills surrounding Manning Lake in Gilmanton, New Hampshire. This small lake is a great place to kayak and fish. Half of the shoreline is undeveloped and it offers a variety of underwater structure in the form of large rocks and boulders in the water and along the shore. With just a few cottages on the lake, it was a quiet place to paddle during the early morning hours.

    White Lake at Dawn

White Lake is a small, picturesque lake near Tamworth, New Hampshire nestled at the southern edge of the White Mountains. It opens up dramatic views of Mount Chocorua and other peaks of the Sandwich Range, as can be seen in this image where early morning fog settles in the valley below the mountain.

The lake was formed when Ice Age glaciers retreated, leaving a depression that filled with water. The shallow waters appear very clean against a light sandy bottom along most of the lake edge.

  • Autumn Sunrise on Mount Chocorua

    Autumn Sunrise on Mount Chocorua

Sunrise bathes Mount Chocorua in glowing orange. Dark evergreens are punctuated by colorful fall foliage of deciduous trees along the shore of Chocorua Lake at the base of the mountain. At 3,490 feet, this is the easternmost peak of the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Although not as lofty as some, it’s bare, rocky summit stands out and can be seen for miles. It is an iconic fixture of the region and is the subject of many photographs and paintings.
