    Shimmering Waters

Hiking the trail up West Rattlesnake Mountain in Holderness, New Hampshire is rewarding for the small effort expended. The views on this early autumn day were spectacular as the waters of Lake Squam shimmer below the summit cliffs. The foliage is just starting to turn color and the view includes Lake Winnipesaukee in the distance.

  • Squamscott Meander

    Squamscott Meander

A view of the Squamscott River in Exeter, New Hampshire as it meanders on its 5-mile journey to Great Bay and on to the Atlantic Ocean. Upstream is the Exeter River which turns into the Squamscott at the head of tide, the farthest point upstream where a river is affected by tidal fluctuations. Sculling boats used by locals as well as teams from Phillips Exeter Academy ply the waters here during high tide. A touch of early fall foliage color and golden marsh grasses reflect in the water as the river curves out of view.

  • Autumn on Pomeroy Cove

    Autumn on Pomeroy Cove

The sea grasses turn golden in autumn at Pomeroy Cove, a tidal section of the Piscataqua River in Dover, New Hampshire. Colorful foliage from the distant trees and an old dock extending toward the water’s edge provide an interesting background to the gentle wavelets lapping the shore.

Nearby Hilton Park is named for European settlers Edward and William Hilton, fishmongers from London, who arrived at Pomeroy’s Cove in the ship “Providence” of Plymouth in 1623. The Dover Library website provides more detail on this area in their Heritage Walking Tour page.

  • Foliage Reflection

    Foliage Reflection

I’ve photographed Mount Chocorua many times before, but each time seems to present a new emotion. Here the fall foliage is coming on strong and the early morning mist on this chilly autumn day rises above the still-warm waters of Chocorua Lake. Thin clouds hover above the broad shoulders of the mountain, almost appearing to be smoke emanating from the jagged peak.

  • Squamscott Stroll

    Squamscott Stroll

Autumn paints the maples brilliant red, orange, and yellow in this scene along the Squamscott River in Exeter, New Hampshire. The path and waterfront wall are part of Swasey Parkway, a gift to the town of Exeter in 1929 by Ambrose Swasey. This scenic park replaced wharves and warehouses from the shipping trade that was active in the 1800’s.

  • Minuteman Statue at North Bridge

    Minuteman Statue at North Bridge

This iconic statue in Concord, Massachusetts was sculpted by Daniel Chester French in 1875. It commemorates the Minute Men, colonists who organized during the Revolutionary War to form trained militia groups in anticipation of battle against Great Britain. These men were often farmers as indicated by the plowshare in the statue. Typically deployed as sharpshooters and skirmishers, they prepared their equipment such that they could quickly be ready to fight, hence the term Minute Men.

The statue is located next to North Bridge which spans the Concord River. Rebuilt several times, the current bridge replica was completed in 1956. This was the site of the first day of battle in the American War of Independence, where Americans fired upon the advancing British troops, killing three of them.

At the North Bridge location in the summer, one often sees volunteers dressed in Colonial period attire, role-playing to educate visitors about life during that era. The National Park Service operates a visitor center a short walk up the hill from the bridge, and features a short video on the battle and exhibits that include “The Hancock”, a brass cannon that was smuggled out of Boston in 1775 and was subsequently confiscated by General Gage of the British Army.

The composition was inspired by The Minute Man stamp (Scott #619) issued in 1925 which depicts the statue as well as tablets inscribed with Ralph Waldo Emerson’s 1836 Concord Hymn poem.

Signature Aviation requisitioned this image for their terminal lobby at Bedford L.G. Hanscom Field in Massachusetts.

  • Albany Covered Bridge

    Albany Covered Bridge

The covered bridge in Albany spans the Swift River which parallels the Kancamagus Highway east from the route’s high point (2,855′) at Kancamagus Pass, in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Built in 1858, it uses a Paddleford truss design, developed by Peter Paddleford in the 1800’s and characterized by a fairly complex arrangement of rafters, posts, and struts that support the roadway and roof. The bridge is 100 feet long and 15 feet wide. It still carries vehicle and foot traffic across the river, although additional supports were added to handle the heavier loads of today’s cars and trucks.

  • Autumn Sunrise on Mount Chocorua

    Autumn Sunrise on Mount Chocorua

Sunrise bathes Mount Chocorua in glowing orange. Dark evergreens are punctuated by colorful fall foliage of deciduous trees along the shore of Chocorua Lake at the base of the mountain. At 3,490 feet, this is the easternmost peak of the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Although not as lofty as some, it’s bare, rocky summit stands out and can be seen for miles. It is an iconic fixture of the region and is the subject of many photographs and paintings.

  • Colorful Connections

    Colorful Connections

A vibrant color palette paints the foliage this autumn day in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. A foot bridge spans the Rocky Gorge Scenic Area, offering a close-up view of the roiling waters of the Swift River below and connecting visitors to the Falls Pond trail loop. The walk on the loop trail is a peaceful complement to the bustle of activity of the gorge.

This area is a favorite of mine, best visited in off-season or early in the morning, since it is a very popular stop on the Kancamagus Highway, a 34-mile American Scenic Byway through the heart of the White Mountains National Forest.
