  • Fog Rolls in at Odiorne

    Fog Rolls in at Odiorne

A gull flies in the distance just above the ocean waters as an early morning fog rolls into Odiorne Point on a calm summer morning. Sea fog forms when warm moist air flows over relatively cooler water which saturates it to the point that water droplets form. This section of the coast has amazing rock formations and is a delight for exploring tide pools.

  • Portsmouth Harbor

    Portsmouth Harbor

This image captures the waterfront along the harbor in Portsmouth, New Hampshire as seen from the newly constructed Memorial Bridge that spans the Piscataqua River between the town and Badger Island Maine. The iconic dark red Moran tugboats can be seen in the distance. Brick residences and offices meet the water’s edge. Penthouses afford commanding views of the pleasure boats and transport ships as they cruise by on their passages between Great Bay further in or the Atlantic Ocean going out. The incredibly strong tidal currents in this area are fascinating to watch as boats fight their way through the narrows.

  • Stone Cottage

    Stone Cottage

The Isles of Shoals are a group of small islands and ledges in the Gulf of Maine six miles off the New Hampshire coastline. A busy fishing area in the past, today this is a popular tourist destination. The Isles of Shoals Steamship Company operates the Thomas Laighton cruise boat, which brings visitors to Star Island. This quaint cottage is one of several marvelous stone buildings clustered on the island. The steeple of Gosport Chapel, a simple meetinghouse built on the highest point of land on the island, can be seen in the background.

  • Lobster Boat Early Dawn

    Lobster Boat Early Dawn

While on a cruise of Portsmouth Harbor, I captured this image of a lobster boat named “Early Dawn” tied up to a pier piled high with lobster traps. The foliage in the background is starting to show its fall colors. The Maine Boats website has an interesting history of the Maine lobster boat, which evolved from simple dories to sloop-style sailboats, to today’s wide, diesel-powered work boats. Another website provides information on taking a tour on a lobster boat at various locations in Maine.

  • Squamscott Meander

    Squamscott Meander

A view of the Squamscott River in Exeter, New Hampshire as it meanders on its 5-mile journey to Great Bay and on to the Atlantic Ocean. Upstream is the Exeter River which turns into the Squamscott at the head of tide, the farthest point upstream where a river is affected by tidal fluctuations. Sculling boats used by locals as well as teams from Phillips Exeter Academy ply the waters here during high tide. A touch of early fall foliage color and golden marsh grasses reflect in the water as the river curves out of view.

  • Autumn on Pomeroy Cove

    Autumn on Pomeroy Cove

The sea grasses turn golden in autumn at Pomeroy Cove, a tidal section of the Piscataqua River in Dover, New Hampshire. Colorful foliage from the distant trees and an old dock extending toward the water’s edge provide an interesting background to the gentle wavelets lapping the shore.

Nearby Hilton Park is named for European settlers Edward and William Hilton, fishmongers from London, who arrived at Pomeroy’s Cove in the ship “Providence” of Plymouth in 1623. The Dover Library website provides more detail on this area in their Heritage Walking Tour page.

  • Durham Landing Fog

    Durham Landing Fog

Moored boats and shoreline trees are reflected in the calm waters of the Oyster River in this scene. Durham Landing, a small park located in the college-town of Durham, New Hampshire, provides an interesting walking path with picnic tables and benches with views of historic houses along the road. In colonial days this was an active ship-building port; remnants of the old docks are still visible from the walking path.

  • Golden Cliff

    Golden Cliff

Sunrise illuminates the cliff and surrounding trees at Stonehouse Pond in Barrington, New Hampshire. An ethereal mist hovers over the pond and a reflection of the cliff appears in the near-shore waters.

The Southeast Land Trust of New Hampshire (SELT) has conserved this area and maintains a trail network here. The hike up the Ledges Trail that leads to the top of the cliff is relatively easy, but care must be taken at the top since it is a sheer 150-foot drop to the pond below.
