This photograph of the marshes in Hampton, NH was taken late summer at sunset. The tide is high in the estuary which includes over 5,000 acres of salt marsh, the largest in New Hampshire.
Custom House Maritime Museum
A couple of HDR images from downtown Newburyport, Massachusetts. The first is the Custom House Maritime Museum, a great little place that showcases Newburyport’s rich seafaring heritage. Among their holdings on display are ship models, shipyard dioramas, and maritime paintings. The building was constructed in 1835 as a custom house, a facility where taxes were collected on imported goods arriving in the harbor. As Newburyport is the birthplace of the Coast Guard, there is a room devoted to the history of that organization from its roots as a string of shoreline life saving stations. The navigation buoy seen in the image is over 60 years old – this style of buoy was used to mark where the water was deep enough for boats.
These images capture some interesting scenes I took on a recent trip to Gloucester, Massachusetts. I used HDR processing followed by artistic filters on all the images in this series to give them a painterly look. There is of course the obligatory Fisherman’s Memorial, which I still cherish as a childhood memory from trips our family took to this area. The statue looks out to the sea and is dedicated to the many fishermen who have lost their lives in their dangerous profession.
